Securing Seawater Pump Bearings Against Corrosion and Load

  • Post last modified:October 9, 2025

Seawater pump bearings operate under severe conditions, including high rotational speed, continuous load, and constant exposure to saltwater corrosion and high dynamic stress. The bearing retention must be permanent, highly robust, and impervious to the corrosive effects of seawater. Failure of the bond leads to immediate pump failure and component destruction.

This is a non-negotiable High Strength, Permanent application with the additional requirement of excellent corrosion resistance.

INCURE WeldLock™ 347 Retaining Compound (Green)

The INCURE WeldLock™ 347 Retaining Compound is the definitive choice. It provides a permanent, high-shear structural bond designed to withstand the extreme dynamic loads and superior chemical/thermal stability required for saltwater environments.

Key FeaturePerformance for Seawater Pump Bearings
High Strength, Fast CuringCreates a monolithic bond that resists maximum vibration, dynamic load, and rotational torque, ensuring the bearing remains precisely seated.
Temperature Resistance (175∘C)Maintains full structural integrity under sustained operational heat and is highly resistant to hot water and chemical corrosion.
Ideal Gap Fill (Up to 0.15mm)Perfectly secures standard press-fit bearings, eliminating the microscopic clearances that cause fretting and allow corrosive seawater to penetrate the joint.
Core ApplicationSuited for securing high-load rotating elements in severe mechanical drives.

Application Steps: Installing Seawater Pump Bearings

For maximum structural integrity and reliable, permanent retention of the bearing, follow these steps:

1. Surface Preparation (The Foundation)

  1. Clean: Thoroughly clean the pump housing bore and the bearing’s outer race. Surfaces must be absolutely free of all water, oil, and contaminants. Use an industrial cleaner (e.g., acetone) and wipe dry.
  2. Activate (If Needed): For maximum cure speed, apply a chemical activator to the bond surfaces and allow it to flash off completely.

2. Product Application

  1. Apply: Apply a continuous, thin bead of WeldLock™ 347 around the full circumference of either the outer race of the bearing or the internal bore of the pump housing.
  2. Ensure Coverage: Ensure the adhesive completely wets the entire mating surface as the components are inserted to create a full environmental seal.

3. Assembly and Curing

  1. Assemble: Immediately slide or press the bearing into the housing bore. Ensure the components are aligned correctly before the compound fixtures.
  2. Wipe Excess: Remove any excess adhesive visible outside the joint immediately after assembly.
  3. Cure: Allow the assembly to fixture before handling (typically 5 minutes). Allow a full 24 hours for the compound to reach maximum structural strength before introducing seawater or subjecting the pump to operational loads.
