Rudder post bushings are subjected to continuous, heavy cyclical stress from steering forces, immense shock loads from waves and impacts, and constant exposure to corrosion from water (fresh or salt). The rigid, permanent retention of these bushings is essential for steering control and hull integrity. Any movement or slippage is catastrophic.
This is a non-negotiable High Strength, Permanent application with the additional requirement of excellent environmental resistance.
INCURE WeldLock™ 347 Retaining Compound (Green)
The INCURE WeldLock™ 347 Retaining Compound is the definitive choice. It provides a permanent, high-shear structural bond designed to withstand extreme dynamic forces, high fatigue, and superior chemical/thermal stability in marine environments.
| Key Feature | Performance for Rudder Post Bushings |
| High Strength, Fast Curing | Creates a monolithic bond that resists maximum cyclical steering forces and shock loads, permanently locking the bushing against spin-out or wear. |
| Temperature Resistance (175∘C) | Maintains full structural integrity under operational heat and is highly resistant to water, fuels, and corrosive elements. |
| Ideal Gap Fill (Up to 0.15mm) | Perfectly secures standard press-fit bushings, eliminating the microscopic clearances that cause fretting and allows corrosive water to penetrate the joint. |
| Core Application | Suited for securing high-load static and rotating elements in severe mechanical and marine systems. |
Application Steps: Installing Rudder Post Bushings
For maximum structural integrity and reliable, permanent retention of the bushing, follow these steps:
1. Surface Preparation (The Foundation)
- Clean: Thoroughly clean the housing bore and the bushing’s outer surface. Surfaces must be absolutely free of all water, oil, and contaminants. Use an industrial cleaner (e.g., acetone) and wipe dry.
- Activate (If Needed): For maximum cure speed, apply a chemical activator to the bond surfaces and allow it to flash off completely.
2. Product Application
- Apply: Apply a continuous, thin coating of WeldLock™ 347 around the full circumference of either the outer surface of the bushing or the internal bore of the housing.
- Ensure Coverage: Ensure the adhesive completely wets the entire mating surface as the components are inserted to create a full environmental seal.
3. Assembly and Curing
- Assemble: Immediately slide or press the bushing into the housing bore. Ensure the component is fully seated and aligned correctly before the compound fixtures.
- Wipe Excess: Remove any excess adhesive visible outside the joint immediately after assembly.
- Cure: Allow the assembly to fixture before handling (typically 5 minutes). Allow a full 24 hours for the compound to reach maximum structural strength before placing the vessel into water or subjecting the rudder to load.
