High-Gloss Doming Resin for Labels, Badges, and Nameplates

A domed label has to do two jobs at once: look like poured glass and survive years of handling, cleaning, and weather on a product that may outlast the company that made it. For production runs of labels, badges, and nameplates, that means a resin that cures fast, bonds hard to printed stock, and holds its gloss. Incure Cast-Max 1049 is a UV-curable doming resin aimed at that industrial use.

Throughput on a Label Line

Two-part doming resins cure over hours and limit batch size to the pot life. A UV-curable resin such as Cast-Max 1049 stays liquid until the lamp reaches it, then cures in seconds. That lets a line dispense, inspect, and cure in a continuous flow, and lets domed sheets be stacked or die-cut shortly after cure rather than the next day.

Adhesion to Printed Substrates

A dome is only as good as its grip on the label stock. Cast-Max 1049 also functions as a structural bonder, developing high bond strength on metals and rigid plastics, which is useful where the domed badge is also mechanically fixed to a product. On printed vinyl, polyester, or polycarbonate stock, confirm adhesion on the actual ink and topcoat, since some print varnishes need a light abrasion or corona pass first.

Watch for:

  • Ink lifting, where an aggressive resin softens the print. Test on a sample before the run.
  • Edge peel, where the dome lifts from the substrate border. A printed dam or a stock with a matte margin improves the anchor.
  • Delamination under flex, if the badge is applied to a curved surface. Choose a resin with enough flexibility to follow the curve.

Edge Control and Gloss

Industrial doming lives or dies on edge definition. Options that keep the resin inside its boundary:

  • A raised printed border or spot-varnish dam.
  • A die-cut edge that gives the resin a clean lip to hold onto.
  • Controlled dispense volume matched to the label footprint.

Gloss comes from the resin curing with an undisturbed surface. Keep air movement low over freshly dispensed parts and let the bead self-level fully before the lamp fires.

Cure Verification

Doming layers are thick relative to a bondline, so full-depth cure is the main risk. Measure delivered dose with a radiometer at the part surface, and check a test dome by pressing the center; a soft center means the light did not reach the base. Dispensing for Consistent Domes

On a label run, every domed part has to look identical. That means dispensing by volume, not by operator judgment. A positive-displacement or auger valve delivers a repeatable shot across a shift; a time-pressure valve drifts as the reservoir level and adhesive temperature change. Condition the resin to a set temperature at the valve so viscosity, and therefore the domed volume, stays constant.

Match the shot size to the label footprint by trial: too little resin leaves a thin, flat coating that does not read as a dome; too much overflows the border. Once dialed in, lock the setting and monitor the first part of each hour against a reference sample.

Handling Bubbles at Volume

Air entrained during dispensing shows as trapped bubbles in the cured dome. On a production line, the fixes are process-level: dispense slowly from a submerged tip, degas the resin reservoir under mild vacuum, and give the bead a short dwell to self-level and release air before it reaches the lamp. A brief infrared or warm-air pass just before cure lowers viscosity enough for the last bubbles to rise out.

Outdoor and Handling Durability

For nameplates on equipment or vehicles, specify low water absorption and UV stability so the dome does not haze or yellow. A 100 percent solids formulation cures without solvent loss, which keeps shrinkage low and the dome dimensionally stable through thermal cycling.
