Understanding how a silicone reaches full properties is as important as choosing the right grade. The question of how long to leave silicone to cure has no single answer, because cure time depends on the curing mechanism, the section thickness, and the surrounding conditions.

The Three Silicone Curing Mechanisms

Moisture cure (RTV). These react with water vapor in the air. A non-tacky skin forms first, usually within 5 minutes to a few hours, and this is often when a part can be moved. Full cure through the section advances at roughly 2 to 3 millimeters per 24 hours, so a 10-millimeter bead can take several days, and low humidity or low temperature stretches that further.

Heat cure (HCR and LSR). These need elevated temperature and cure in seconds to minutes once the material reaches the set point, which is why they suit high-volume molding and dispensing. Cure depends on the temperature profile, dwell time, and part mass.

UV cure. Photoinitiators react to ultraviolet light, typically 365 to 405 nanometers, giving handling strength in seconds to a few minutes under adequate lamp intensity. Grades with a secondary moisture cure finish shadowed regions over the normal moisture-cure timeline of 24 to 72 hours.

Tack-Free Time Is Not Full Cure

Two numbers matter and they are often confused:

  • Tack-free or handling time: The surface is no longer sticky and parts can be moved or advanced without material transfer. The bulk underneath is still developing properties.
  • Full cure time: The silicone has reached its target tensile strength, adhesion, and elongation throughout the section. Loading a joint to service stress before full cure risks premature failure.

For critical assemblies, plan the process schedule around full cure, not tack-free time.

What Slows a Moisture Cure Down

Moisture-cure silicone depends on water vapor diffusing in from the exposed surface, so anything that limits that diffusion extends the cure. Low relative humidity is the most common cause: dropping from 50 percent to 20 percent relative humidity can roughly double the time to full cure. Low temperature slows the reaction chemistry itself, with cure rate falling by around half for every 10 degree Celsius drop. Deep sections and confined joints cure from the outside in, so a fully enclosed bond line may never complete without a secondary mechanism. A skinned-over surface also slows vapor transfer to the material beneath it. Sealing a moisture-cure bead between two impermeable substrates is the classic mistake that leaves a permanently soft core.

Practical Cure-Time Figures

As working numbers for planning, moisture-cure RTV silicone skins in 5 to 60 minutes, becomes tack-free in 1 to 3 hours, and reaches full properties at roughly 2 to 3 millimeters of depth per 24 hours. Heat-cure silicone completes in 30 seconds to 10 minutes at 120 to 175 degrees Celsius. UV-cure silicone fixtures in 2 to 30 seconds under adequate irradiance, with any moisture-cure secondary reaction following the RTV timeline in shadowed zones. Always treat these as starting points and confirm against the specific grade.
