A finished surface is judged first on how it looks and then on how long it keeps looking that way. A clear epoxy coating resin has to pour flat, cure glass-smooth, hold its clarity under light, and shrug off the scratches and spills a working surface collects.
What a Coating Resin Does
A coating resin is a two-part epoxy poured as a thin layer over an existing substrate, where it self-levels and cures to a hard, transparent film. It is distinct from a casting resin, which is formulated for depth and optical clarity in thick pours. Using a coating resin for a deep cast, or a casting resin as a thin topcoat, gives poor results in both directions.
Incure’s clear epoxy coating resin is engineered for thin, flat, glossy applications, typically poured between 1 mm and 3 mm and up to about 5 mm per layer.
Clarity and Gloss
The resin cures water-clear, so an underlying wood grain, print, or embedded object shows through without the yellow cast that ages many epoxies. The cured surface levels to a smooth, high-gloss finish that lifts the perceived quality of the piece. A UV-stabilized formulation resists the yellowing and clarity loss that untreated epoxies show after prolonged light exposure, which matters for anything displayed near a window or under bright lighting.
Easier Processing
Two formulation features cut labor:
- Self-leveling. The resin flows to a uniform, flat film with minimal spreading by hand.
- Self-degassing. Additives let trapped air rise and release on its own, reducing or eliminating the torch-and-heat-gun bubble work that thin pours usually require.
Together these shorten the time from mix to finished coat and reduce the rework rate on visible surfaces.
Durability and Repair
A cured coat resists scratches and abrasion well enough for tabletops, counters, and floors in daily use. When damage does happen, the surface is straightforward to restore: abrasive paper followed by standard polishing compound brings back full gloss without recoating the whole piece. That repairability is part of the long-term economics of an epoxy surface.
Where It Fits
- Tabletops and counters: dining tables, bar tops, and reception desks, often over wood or an embedded design.
- Furniture refinishing: a hard, clear topcoat over reclaimed or figured wood.
- Decorative flooring: poured gloss floors, coin and object embedments, and pigmented or metallic finishes in commercial and residential spaces.
- Art and print protection: a glossy protective layer over paintings, photographs, and mixed media that deepens color.
- Creative embedments: sealing bottle caps, crushed glass, or stone into a level, clear surface.
Coating vs. Casting
If the project needs a solid clear block, a river-table infill, or any pour beyond roughly 5 mm, a dedicated casting resin is the right choice. It manages exotherm in thick sections and delivers the depth clarity a coating resin is not built for. For a thick casting that also needs a mirror-flat top face, cast in the casting resin and finish with a thin coat of coating resin over the cured surface.

Getting a Flawless Coat
- Prepare the surface. Sand, clean, and seal porous substrates so outgassing does not push bubbles up through the coat.
- Control temperature. Mix and pour in a stable room around 21 to 24 degrees C. Cold resin traps bubbles and levels poorly; warm resin cures too fast.
- Measure by weight or volume exactly. Off-ratio epoxy stays soft or hazy.
- Work in thin layers. Recoat within the resin’s stated window for a chemical bond between layers, or abrade and clean if that window has passed.
- Protect the cure. Cover the piece against dust and drafts until the surface is tack-free.

Common Coating Defects and Their Causes
- Fisheyes and craters. Silicone or oil contamination on the substrate. Clean thoroughly and avoid silicone-based products anywhere near the work area.
- Persistent micro-bubbles. Outgassing from an unsealed porous substrate, or resin poured too cold. Seal first and warm the room.
- Soft or rubbery patches. Off-ratio mixing or incomplete blending. Measure precisely and scrape the sides and bottom of the mixing vessel.
- Amber tint developing over months. A non-UV-stabilized resin, or a stabilized resin past its useful life in intense light. Specify a UV-stable grade for lit environments.
- Delamination between coats. The recoat window was missed. Abrade and clean the cured layer before adding the next.
Service Life and Maintenance
A cured coating on a working surface should be wiped with mild detergent, not solvents, which can dull the gloss over time. Trivets and cutting boards protect against localized heat and abrasion; while the coat resists scratching, it is not a metal surface. Minor wear buffs out with polishing compound, and a worn area can be scuffed and recoated locally without redoing the whole piece.
