Incure Epo-Weld™ 6468: Black Epoxy Adhesive for Strong Bonds

Some assemblies need an adhesive that also hides what is underneath: a black bond line that blocks stray light, masks a repair, or gives a finished edge a uniform look. Incure Epo-Weld™ HTE-6468 is a fast-setting black epoxy that bonds, seals, and encapsulates in one step.

What HTE-6468 is

Epo-Weld™ HTE-6468 is a two-component epoxy pigmented to a high-gloss black. It works as an adhesive, a sealant, and an encapsulant, and it is formulated for rapid handling with a pot life of about 3 minutes and useful strength developing within roughly 15 minutes. It resists elevated temperatures and a range of chemicals and is RoHS compliant.

The black pigment is not just cosmetic. An opaque bond line blocks light leakage in optical and display assemblies, protects light-sensitive encapsulated components, and gives a consistent appearance on visible edges.

Key properties and what they mean

  • Opaque black finish. Blocks stray light in optical paths, conceals internal structure, and provides a uniform visible bond line.
  • Fast set. Short pot life and quick strength gain suit high-throughput assembly and field repairs that cannot be clamped for hours. The trade-off is a short working window, so mix small and position parts first.

  • Temperature and chemical resistance. The cured epoxy holds up in warm, chemically active environments.

Surface preparation and joint design

Keep the bond line thin and even, about 0.1 to 0.25 mm, and design the joint for shear loading rather than peel. Degrease the metal, abrade it to fresh material, and wipe again before bonding. On plastics, confirm compatibility and clean without leaving a residue. On glass, use a clean solvent wipe. Bond within a few hours of preparation.

Working with a fast-set adhesive

  1. Prepare and position all parts and fixtures before dispensing.
  2. Mix only what you can apply in about two minutes.
  3. Close the joint and set the fixture immediately.
  4. Leave the assembly undisturbed until it passes handling strength; full properties develop over the following day.

Failure modes and prevention

  • Voids or a starved joint: the mix gelled before the parts closed. Use smaller batches and work faster.
  • Peel at the interface: contamination or a weak oxide on metal. Improve degreasing and abrasion.
  • Incomplete cure: off-ratio metering or poor mixing. Use pre-measured kits and a fresh mixing nozzle.
  • Gloss or color variation: inconsistent mixing or a contaminated surface. Standardize the mix and cleaning steps.

Getting a clean black bond line

The black pigment that makes HTE-6468 useful also makes application faults obvious on a finished product. A skipped section reads as a gray gap, an air bubble shows as a bright pit, and a smeared edge is hard to clean off a light-colored housing. To get a consistent result, dispense at a controlled rate so the bead is even, close the joint with steady pressure so squeeze-out is uniform, and wipe excess adhesive immediately with a solvent-dampened cloth before it gels, since a fast-set epoxy is very difficult to remove once cured. Where the bond line is a visible design feature, a shallow recess or a step in the joint gives the adhesive a defined edge to fill and hides minor variation.

Encapsulation practice

When HTE-6468 is used to encapsulate a small component rather than bond a joint, keep the pour shallow and build it up in passes so trapped air can escape before the surface skins. The short working time means each pass has to be placed quickly; for anything larger than a small potted area, a slower-curing encapsulant is easier to control.

Quality checks

Bond and pull a witness coupon with each run, and inspect the cured bond line on finished parts under good light for pits, skips, and haze. A sound joint fails cohesively; a clean release from the substrate means the surface prep needs work.
