The word permanent gets attached to high-strength threadlockers, and it leads to designs that are hard to service. In practice, threadlocker removability is a design variable you choose. Selecting the right grade at the design stage, and documenting it, determines how easy the product is to maintain over its life.

Removability Is a Spectrum, Not a Switch

Threadlockers are anaerobic adhesives that cure to a thermoset film within the threads. That film can be broken mechanically or degraded with heat. How much effort each takes is set by the strength grade:

  • Low strength, purple: releases with hand tools at close to normal fastener torque. For small screws and frequently adjusted parts.
  • Medium strength, blue: releases with hand tools at elevated torque, no heat needed. The general-purpose choice for joints serviced occasionally.
  • High strength, red: requires localized heat, roughly 250 to 300 degrees C, plus force, and is intended for joints opened only at major overhaul.

Choosing a grade is really choosing how the joint will be serviced years from now.

Designing for Serviceability

Work through these questions for each fastener during design:

  1. Will this joint ever be opened in the field? If yes with hand tools, specify medium strength. If only at depot-level overhaul, high strength is acceptable.
  2. What is near the fastener? If plastic housings, wiring, seals, or bearings sit close, a high-strength grade that needs a torch to remove may be the wrong choice, since the heat can damage neighbors.
  3. Who services it? A field technician with hand tools needs a grade they can actually remove on site. A factory rebuild line can handle heat.
  4. How critical is the joint? Weigh the consequence of loosening against the difficulty of planned removal, and pick the lowest grade that still meets the locking requirement.

Documenting the Decision

  • Bill of materials: record the specific grade against each fastener, not a generic note.
  • Assembly instructions: state the volume, whether an activator is required, and the target clamp load.
  • Service manual: state the grade and the removal procedure, including target heat for high-strength grades and the tools required.

Undocumented threadlocker is a common cause of stripped fasteners in the field, because a technician who does not know a red grade is present will try to break it cold.

Reassembly After Removal

A serviced joint only performs if the reassembly is done properly.

  • Remove all cured residue. Brush the male and female threads, using a brass brush on softer metals, and run a tap through blind holes. Old cured film prevents the new threadlocker from reaching rated strength.
  • Degrease. Wipe with acetone, isopropyl alcohol, or a dedicated anaerobic adhesive cleaner and allow to dry.
  • Apply fresh threadlocker. Never reapply over old material. Use the grade specified for that location.
  • Reach the correct clamp load, and allow cure time before returning the assembly to full service.

The Cost of Over-Specifying Strength

Defaulting to a high-strength grade “to be safe” carries real downstream cost. Every future service event on that joint now requires a heat source, more time, and the risk of collateral heat damage. On a product with many such joints, field service hours climb, technicians improvise with excessive force, and warranty repairs turn into part replacements. A medium-strength grade holds against the vibration seen in most machinery and equipment, and it releases with a wrench. Reserve high strength for joints where loosening is genuinely a safety or catastrophic-failure event and where planned removal happens only in a shop with proper equipment. Matching grade to consequence, rather than always choosing the strongest, keeps both reliability and serviceability intact.

Verifying the Choice

Before releasing a design, confirm the grade on representative hardware. Apply the specified threadlocker, cure fully, then measure breakaway and prevailing torque and compare against the data sheet. For a joint intended to be field-serviceable, have a technician remove it with the tools they will actually carry. For a high-strength joint, run the heated-removal procedure and check that nearby components survive the process. This closes the loop between the grade written in the bill of materials and the real service experience.
