A batch of two-part adhesive that mixed perfectly can still ruin a joint if it sits too long before dispensing. Pot life is the clock that starts the moment resin meets hardener, and managing it well is one of the simplest, most overlooked levers for cutting waste and improving bond consistency.

What Pot Life Actually Measures

Pot life is the time it takes a mixed two-part adhesive to reach a viscosity where it can no longer be applied reliably, commonly defined as the point at which the initial mixed viscosity doubles, or quadruples for very low-viscosity products. The clock starts at mixing, when resin and hardener begin an exothermic polymerization reaction that steadily thickens the material until it gels.

Pot life is often confused with two related but different terms. Working life is the practical window you have in your own process, generally shorter than the lab-measured pot life because real dispensing conditions differ from the test method. Cure time is the total time to reach final mechanical and chemical properties, which can be many times longer than pot life.

What Drives Pot Life

  • Temperature. The dominant factor. Because the reaction is exothermic, a warmer room or a larger mixed mass raises its own temperature and accelerates the reaction. As a rough guide, every 10°C rise in ambient or mix temperature can roughly halve the pot life.
  • Mixed volume. A larger mixed mass generates more total heat and dissipates it more slowly relative to its volume, so a 500-gram batch will typically gel far sooner than a 50-gram batch of the same material.
  • Mixing ratio accuracy. Deviating from the specified resin-to-hardener ratio changes both the pot life and the final cured properties, and can leave the material undercured even after it appears to gel.
  • Container geometry. A wide, shallow container dissipates heat faster than a narrow, deep one, extending usable time; a deep container traps heat and shortens it.

Managing Pot Life in Production

1. Mix to the batch size you can use

Match mixed volume to what your line can dispense inside the working life, not the full stated pot life. This is the single largest lever most shops have available without new equipment.

2. Move to automated metering and mixing

For higher volumes, a metering and dispensing system mixes the exact ratio on demand and applies only what is needed, removing the pot-life question from the process entirely along with the ratio-error risk.

3. Control the working environment

A temperature-controlled area keeps pot life predictable shift to shift. Where a short pot life is limiting output, pre-chilling the resin and hardener before mixing can meaningfully extend usable time.

4. Use container shape to your advantage

Parts bonded near the end of the working life often look acceptable at application but fail prematurely because the viscosity rise already degraded wetting and flow into the joint.
