Securing Crankshaft Timing Gears for Engine Accuracy

  • Post last modified:October 10, 2025

Securing crankshaft timing gears (or sprockets) is a mission-critical application within an engine. This joint dictates valve timing and ignition sequence; any slippage is catastrophic. The assembly is subjected to high torsional load(driving the camshaft, oil pump, etc.), intense shock forces (cyclical combustion pulses), and constant vibration.Standard press fits and keyways are prone to fretting corrosion and micro-movement over time, leading to timing changes, power loss, and engine damage. A high-strength retaining compound eliminates this clearance, creating a rigid, slip-free bond that ensures permanent, accurate valve timing.

INCURE WeldLock™ 365 Retaining Compound

For securing crankshaft timing gears—where maximum shear strengthhigh-temperature resistance, and torsional stability are paramount—the WeldLock™ 365 provides the highest structural integrity. Its superior strength ensures the gear cannot shift, maintaining the crucial, non-negotiable relationship between the crankshaft and camshaft.

Feature & BenefitTechnical Insight for Timing Gear AssembliesConversion Value
Highest Strength (365)Cures to an extremely high-shear strength, rigid plastic, providing maximum resistance to torsional shock and cyclical fatigue.Zero Slippage: Guarantees absolute, 100%torque transmission and prevents timing drift.
High Temperature ResistanceWithstands continuous operational temperatures up to 200∘C (392∘F), essential for components operating near the hot engine core.End the Heat Threat: Ensures the bond remains strong and rigid under maximum engine thermal load.
Fills Close Clearance GapsIdeal for the precision slip fit (less than 0.05 mmdiametral clearance) typical of timing components.Maximizes Contact: Converts the fit into an integrated component, optimizing load distribution and alignment.
Oil & Fuel ImmunityInert to engine oil and combustion byproducts, ensuring the integrity of the joint is protected within the engine environment.Reliability Assured: The bond remains permanently intact throughout the engine’s lifespan.

Application Steps: Locking Timing Gears for Maximum Engine Accuracy

Preparation (Critical): Thoroughly clean both the timing gear bore and the crankshaft nose mating surface. Remove all oil, grease, and residue. Use a degreasing solvent (like acetone or brake cleaner) and wipe until both metal surfaces are perfectly dry.

Application: Apply a continuous, liberal bead of WeldLock™ 365 evenly around the crankshaft nose. Alternatively, apply it to the inside circumference of the gear bore. Ensure the compound completely covers the mating area.

Assembly: Slide or press the timing gear onto the crankshaft, ensuring keyways (if present) are aligned. Ensure the component is seated correctly. Wipe away any excess compound immediately.

Curing Time (Mandatory): Allow a full 24 hours for the compound to reach full cure strength before continuing assembly (installing belts/chains) and before operating the engine.

Stop risking catastrophic engine failure, and ensure your timing components are absolutely locked in place.
