When a production line needs a bond in seconds and the parts are small, cyanoacrylate adhesives are hard to beat. These single-part instant adhesives cure on contact with trace surface moisture, making them a practical choice for high-volume assembly, rework, and fixturing. How Cyanoacrylate Cures Cyanoacrylate is an ethyl, methyl, or specialty alkyl ester that polymerizes by anionic reaction. A thin layer of adsorbed water on almost any surface neutralizes the acidic stabilizer in the resin, and the monomer chains link rapidly across the joint. Fixture strength develops in 5 to 60 seconds, and full cure follows over 24 hours as the network completes. Thin bond lines cure faster than thick ones because the reaction depends on moisture reaching the resin, which is also why very wide gaps cure slowly or not at all without an accelerator. Viscosity Grades and What They Do Water-thin (2 to 5 cP): wicks into press-fit and slip-fit joints already assembled; sets almost instantly. Medium (100 to 1,500 cP): general assembly on close-fitting parts where some working time is needed. Gel and thixotropic grades: fill gaps up to roughly 0.5 mm, stay put on vertical surfaces, and reduce blooming on porous substrates. Rubber-toughened grades: add peel and impact resistance, trading a little cure speed for durability. Strengths and Real Limits Cyanoacrylate bonds a wide range of plastics, elastomers, metals, ceramics, wood, and composites, often reaching tensile shear values of 2,000 to 3,000 psi on rigid substrates. It excels at bonding rubber and flexible plastics that resist other chemistries. The trade-offs are real: standard grades are brittle in peel and cleavage, lose strength above about 180°F, are attacked by prolonged moisture and polar solvents, and can bloom a white haze from monomer vapor. Bonds to acidic surfaces or highly plasticized vinyl may weaken over time.
