Low Outgassing UV Adhesives: Where They Matter and How to Specify Them
A bond can be strong, clear, and correctly cured and still ruin the assembly around it. If the adhesive releases trace gas over time, that vapor condenses on nearby optics, sensors, and electrical contacts. Low outgassing UV adhesives exist to keep a sealed or evacuated system clean over its full service life. What Outgassing Is Outgassing is the slow release of volatile compounds from a cured material when it sits under vacuum or at elevated temperature. The source is usually unreacted monomer, residual photoinitiator fragments, absorbed moisture, or low-molecular-weight additives left in the polymer. In an open assembly the vapor disperses and no one notices. In a closed enclosure it redeposits on the coldest or most sensitive surface nearby. Why It Damages Product Quality Optical fogging. The deposit builds over weeks or months, so the problem often appears after the product ships rather than on the line. How Low Outgassing Adhesives Are Measured The common reference test heats a cured sample under vacuum, typically 125 C at high vacuum for 24 hours, and measures two numbers: total mass loss and the fraction that condenses on a cooled collector. Adhesives are frequently screened against thresholds of 1.0 percent total mass loss and 0.1 percent collected volatile condensable material. A formulation that meets those limits has been reworked to drive cure conversion high and to remove or replace the mobile species that would otherwise escape. Ask for the test data rather than assuming a clear, hard adhesive is automatically low outgassing. A related number worth requesting is the water vapor recovered mass, since absorbed moisture is a large part of what a hygroscopic adhesive gives back under vacuum. If the assembly will be baked and sealed in a dry environment, the moisture contribution can be managed separately from the true organic outgassing of the polymer.
