The Alignment Lock: Securing Pins in Precision Tooling for Serviceability

  • Post last modified:October 9, 2025

Mounting pins in precision tooling (jigs, fixtures, gauges) are used for critical alignment and location. While they must resist light vibration, operational movement, and potential temperature fluctuations, they are often designed to be serviceable and easily removable for tool maintenance, calibration, or replacement. This requires a strong, anti-vibration lock that still permits non-destructive disassembly with minimal effort.

This is a Medium Strength, Serviceable Precision application.

INCURE WeldLock™ 338 Retaining Compound (Yellow)

The INCURE WeldLock™ 338 Retaining Compound is the functional “Medium Strength” solution, specifically designed for applications where future disassembly is required. It provides the necessary anti-vibration security without damaging expensive tooling components upon removal.

Key FeaturePerformance for Precision Tooling Pins
Serviceable Bond (Yellow)Specifically designed for assemblies requiring removal or repositioning. Locks the pin securely against vibration but allows for non-destructive removal when the fixture needs recalibration or repair.
Excellent Vibration ResistanceProvides reliable holding power against operational shock and vibration, ensuring the pin’s precise location is maintained.
Gap Fill (Up to 0.25mm)Effectively fills the small clearances typical in precision jig and fixture bores, eliminating any play that compromises measurement or location accuracy.
Medium ViscosityAllows for controlled application into tight, small bores common in precision tooling.

Application Steps: Installing Pins in Precision Tooling

For optimal positioning and reliable, yet removable, retention of mounting pins, follow these steps:

1. Surface Preparation (The Foundation)

  1. Clean: Thoroughly clean both the pin surface and the bore. Surfaces must be free of oil, residue, and contaminants.Use a precision cleaner or solvent (e.g., acetone) and wipe dry.
  2. Activate (If Needed): Due to the small size and often passive nature of tooling pins, the use of a chemical activator is often recommended to ensure rapid and consistent curing. Apply to one surface and allow it to flash off.

2. Product Application

  1. Apply: Apply a continuous, thin bead of WeldLock™ 338 around the full circumference of the pin near the point where it enters the bore.
  2. Ensure Coverage: Ensure the adhesive completely wets the entire mating surface as the pin is inserted.

3. Assembly and Curing

  1. Assemble: Immediately insert or press the pin into the bore. Ensure the pin is fully seated and aligned correctly before the compound fixtures.
  2. Wipe Excess: Remove any excess adhesive visible outside the joint immediately.
  3. Cure: Allow the assembly to fixture before handling (typically 10-30 minutes). Allow a full 24 hours for the compound to reach maximum strength before placing the precision tooling into operational use.
