The two materials expand at very different rates, so every temperature swing works the bond line in shear. A high-temperature glass adhesive has to hold that interface together while staying rigid enough to keep optical components aligned.

Why the Joint Is Demanding

Glass has a low coefficient of thermal expansion — roughly 3 to 9 ppm/°C depending on the type. Aluminum runs near 23 ppm/°C, stainless steel near 17. Across a 150°C excursion, a 50 mm bonded length between glass and aluminum sees on the order of 0.1 mm of differential movement concentrated at the adhesive. The adhesive must absorb that strain without cracking, yet stay stiff enough that the bonded part does not shift under load. Those two requirements pull in opposite directions, which is why grade selection matters more than raw bond strength. The mechanism is covered in more depth in how CTE mismatch causes adhesive bond failure.

Specifications That Matter

When evaluating a high-temperature glass adhesive, weigh these against the actual service condition:

Continuous service temperature. Distinguish the continuous rating from the short-term spike rating; a bond qualified for a 250°C spike may only tolerate 180°C continuously.

Glass transition temperature (Tg). For a structural bond that must not creep, target a Tg comfortably above the maximum service temperature. Datasheet Tg is measured dry; humid service can drop the effective Tg by 15 to 30°C.

Viscosity. Low viscosity (tens of cP) wicks into tight capillary joints; thixotropic gels hold a defined gap on a vertical face.

Cured hardness. Shore D60 to D85 for rigid structural assemblies; a softer grade where the joint must flex with thermal movement.

Outgassing. For vacuum or optical enclosures, look for a low-outgassing profile (the ASTM E595 method is the common reference).

UV-Curable vs. Heat-Cure Chemistry

UV-curable acrylate adhesives cure in seconds and allow precise alignment before the light is applied, which suits high-volume optical assembly. Their practical continuous-temperature ceiling is generally in the 150 to 200°C range. Incure’s Uni-Weld™ UV Glass & Metal Bonder line — grades such as 1910, 1931, 2204VT, 2463G, 2813, and 8260 — covers this range, cured through the glass since metal blocks the light from the other side.

For continuous service above roughly 200°C, a heat-cure epoxy is the better tool. Incure’s Epo-Weld™ high-temperature epoxy grades are formulated for elevated Tg and sustained thermal exposure, at the cost of an oven cure step and no cure-on-demand alignment window. Match the chemistry to the temperature first, then optimize for process.

Email Us with your substrate pair, peak and continuous temperatures, and joint geometry for a grade recommendation.

Where It Is Used

Aerospace and defense. Cockpit and instrument displays, lens bonding in optical sensors, and window retention, all subject to rapid thermal cycling from high-altitude cold to engine-bay heat, with vibration damping as a secondary requirement.

Industrial lighting and heating. Sight glasses on furnaces and ovens, lamp-capsule bonding, and viewport windows on process equipment that run hot continuously.

Electronics and optoelectronics. High-power LED lenses, camera modules, and sensor windows where localized heat from the device itself stresses the bond, and where refractive-index control keeps the optical path clean.

Why Not Mechanical Fasteners

Clamps, brackets, and screwed retainers concentrate load at a few points on the glass, and glass fails from point stress long before it fails from distributed stress. A bonded joint spreads the load across the full bond area, tolerates thinner and lighter glass, and seals the interface against moisture and particulate in the same step. The trade is process control: a fastener is forgiving of a sloppy fit, while an adhesive bond is only as good as the surface prep, the bond-line thickness, and the cure. Treat all three as controlled process parameters with written limits rather than operator judgment.

Substrate Preparation

Surface prep drives the result. Degrease both faces, then clean the glass with an appropriate glass cleaner and dry it fully; handle with gloves afterward. Glass often benefits from a silane coupling agent, which forms a chemical bridge between the inorganic surface and the organic adhesive and markedly improves wet-strength retention. On the metal side, light abrasion plus a solvent wipe breaks the oxide and adds mechanical key. Contamination matters more at high temperature: a trapped film of oil that is harmless at room temperature can volatilize and form bubbles or a delamination path once the assembly is heated.

Qualifying for Service

Bond and cure production parts to the intended schedule, not lab coupons. Run accelerated aging — damp heat at 85°C and 85% relative humidity, plus thermal shock across the full service range — then measure retained shear strength against the room-temperature baseline and inspect the bond line for haze, cracking, or edge lift. Where the design allows, load the adhesive in shear rather than peel, and use a slightly thicker bond line on high-mismatch joints to spread the strain.

Contact Our Team to match a glass-to-metal adhesive and cure process to your temperature and production requirements.

Visit www.incurelab.com for more information.

Bonding glass to metal is hard at room temperature and harder hot.
