Thermoplastic polyurethane has become one of the most widely specified flexible materials in manufacturing \u2014 footwear, inflatable products, gaskets, protective housings \u2014 and whether a given TPU part needs adhesive at all depends on the assembly method behind it.<\/p>\n

When TPU Doesn’t Need Glue<\/h3>\n

TPU is a true thermoplastic, meaning it softens and re-solidifies with heat rather than curing permanently the way a thermoset does. That property makes thermal welding a genuine alternative to adhesive bonding. A heated iron, hot-air welder, or ultrasonic welding process can melt the interface between two TPU parts and fuse them into a single continuous material, producing a bond that’s often stronger than an adhesive joint because there’s no separate bond-line material to fail \u2014 the parts become chemically one piece. In these cases, a brief surface treatment \u2014 plasma treatment, corona treatment, or a chemical primer specifically formulated for polyurethane surfaces \u2014 can raise surface energy enough to meaningfully improve adhesive wet-out and final bond strength.
