The matrix resin that binds the fibers together is typically an epoxy, polyester, or vinyl ester system, and the surface properties of cured composites present specific adhesion challenges that differ from both metals and unreinforced plastics.<\/p>\n<h3>Composite Surface Properties Relevant to Bonding<\/h3>\n<p>The bondability of a composite surface depends on its state:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>As-laminated (peel-ply removed)<\/strong>: A fresh composite surface with peel-ply removed just before bonding has high surface energy and bonds well to most adhesive systems<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mold-release contaminated<\/strong>: Composites removed from molds retain mold release agent, significantly reducing surface energy and requiring solvent cleaning and abrasion before bonding<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aged or weathered<\/strong>: Composites aged outdoors develop oxidized, low-energy surfaces that need abrasion to expose fresh resin for bonding<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fiber-exposed (sanded through the resin surface)<\/strong>: Over-sanding exposes dry fibers rather than resin, producing weak mechanical bonding but poor chemical adhesion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>UV Glue on Composite Materials<\/h3>\n<p>Standard UV-curing adhesives face a fundamental constraint on composite bonding: most composite materials are opaque \u2014 carbon fiber especially \u2014 blocking UV light from reaching the bond line. This prevents cure of any adhesive at the interior of the joint on carbon fiber, glass-reinforced plastic, and similar dark or thick composite substrates.<\/p>\n<h4>Where UV Adhesive Works on Composites<\/h4>\n<p>There are specific composite applications where UV adhesive is viable:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Thin fiberglass laminates<\/strong>: Very thin, light-colored fiberglass panels transmit some UV radiation. The chemical compatibility of epoxy adhesive with epoxy-matrix composite substrates produces bonds with excellent substrate-level adhesion. In many cases, properly prepared composite joints bonded with structural epoxy fail cohesively in the composite rather than at the adhesive interface \u2014 the bond exceeds the substrate&#8217;s own interlaminar shear strength.<\/p>\n<h4>Film Adhesive vs. Paste Adhesive<\/h4>\n<p>Two formats of structural epoxy adhesive are used in composite bonding:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Paste adhesives<\/strong>: Two-part epoxy in syringe or cartridge form, applied manually. Suitable for repairs, small bond areas, and secondary bonding of discrete components. Typical lap shear strength on carbon fiber composite: 20\u201335 MPa.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Film adhesives<\/strong>: Pre-catalyzed epoxy film supported on a carrier, co-cured with the composite laminate in an oven or autoclave. These are the standard structural bonding medium in aerospace composite manufacturing. Film adhesives achieve the highest bond strength and most uniform bond line thickness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Surface Preparation Protocol<\/h4>\n<p>For structural composite bonding with epoxy:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Abrade surface with 120 grit abrasive to remove oxidized resin and create a fresh bonding surface<\/li>\n<li>Vacuum to remove abrasive debris<\/li>\n<li>Wipe with acetone or MEK, allow to dry completely<\/li>\n<li>Apply adhesive within 30 minutes of surface preparation \u2014 do not allow the prepared surface to re-contaminate<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Toughened Epoxy for Composite Joints<\/h4>\n<p>Standard rigid epoxy has relatively low peel strength on composite substrates \u2014 the stress concentration at the joint termination point can exceed the interlaminar strength of the composite.
