A UV-curable coating skips that step: the board goes under a lamp, the film hardens in seconds, and the assembly is ready to handle. For a line running thousands of boards a shift, that difference reshapes the whole coating operation.

Why UV cure changes the economics

Traditional acrylic and urethane conformal coatings are dissolved in solvent. After application, the solvent has to flash off and then the resin cures over minutes to hours, so the line needs long conveyor tunnels or racks of drying boards as work-in-process. The solvent itself is a VOC that requires ventilation and, often, abatement.

A UV-curable coating is 100% solids. There is no solvent, so the wet film thickness is the cured film thickness, nothing evaporates, and there is no VOC load. Under a UV lamp the resin crosslinks in seconds. The practical results are a short in-line cure zone instead of a long tunnel, near-zero work-in-process, and consistent thickness because nothing shrinks away during drying.

Incure’s Ultra-Illumina™ UV conformal coatings are formulated for this high-volume model, with properties tuned for spray application and rapid cure.

Handling shadowed areas

The one real limitation of UV cure is line of sight. Resin under a tall electrolytic capacitor, beside a connector shroud, or beneath a shield can never see the lamp. Incure’s coatings address this with a secondary moisture-cure mechanism: shadowed resin crosslinks slowly by reacting with atmospheric humidity over the hours after UV exposure, so the film reaches full properties everywhere, not just where the light hit.

That means the process has two stages in practice: an immediate UV cure of the exposed film, then a rest period in normal shop humidity before boards are stacked, conformal-tested, or shipped.

Delivering the right UV dose

Cure depends on getting enough energy at the right wavelength onto the film as the board passes the lamp. Under-dosed coating stays tacky and under-crosslinked; the film picks up dirt and its moisture resistance suffers. Matching lamp intensity to conveyor speed and board width is a real design task. Incure’s guidance on matching a UV conveyor lamp head to line speed and part width and on choosing a UV LED flood lamp by curing area and intensity covers the trade-offs. Lamp output also drifts over time, which is why periodic radiometry matters; see what causes UV light guide degradation over time.

Inspection built into the coating

Incure’s UV conformal coatings carry a permanent fluorescent tracer. Under a UV inspection lamp, coated areas glow and uncoated areas stay dark, so an operator or an automated optical inspection station can confirm coverage, catch skips and thin spots, and verify that keep-out zones around connectors are clean. This turns coverage verification from a subjective visual check into a repeatable one.

Application essentials

Clean and dry every board first; flux and ionic residue trapped under the film cause corrosion regardless of coating quality

Mask connectors, test points, press-fit pins, and thermal interface pads

Apply a uniform wet film in the specified thickness band, usually 25 to 130 micrometers, by selective spray, curtain, or dip

Cure exposed film under UV immediately, then hold the assembly in ambient humidity so shadowed and sub-surface resin completes its moisture cure

Designing against cracking

Once cured, the film is stretched and compressed every time the board cycles temperature. Cracks start at the sharp corners of leaded components and the ends of large ceramic capacitors, driven by the expansion mismatch among the coating, the laminate, and the parts. Incure’s overview of how CTE mismatch causes bond failure explains the mechanism; a coating with adequate cured elongation absorbs the movement instead of fracturing.

Selective coating versus dip

High-volume lines usually apply UV conformal coating by selective spray, where a programmed nozzle traces the board and coats only the areas that need it, leaving connectors and keep-outs clean without masking. This eliminates the labor of applying and removing masking tape and boots, which on a complex board can exceed the coating time itself. Dip coating is faster per board but coats everything, so it demands thorough masking and is better suited to simple boards or to assemblies where full coverage is acceptable. Curtain coating sits between the two for flat, high-throughput work.

Film thickness measurement

Specify and verify film thickness. Wet-film combs give a quick in-process reading; cured thickness is confirmed with an eddy-current or micrometer gauge on a witness coupon run alongside production, or with a cross-section on a sacrificial board during qualification. A coating that is too thin has pinholes and poor moisture resistance; one that is too thick is slow to cure through and prone to cracking at component corners. Most specifications call out a band, commonly 30 to 130 micrometers, rather than a single number.

Storage and pot stability

Keep uncured coating in its original opaque container, cool and away from daylight and stray UV, which slowly advance the cure and raise viscosity. Rotate stock by receipt date. Let chilled material equilibrate to room temperature before it goes into the applicator, because a viscosity swing changes the deposited film weight and can starve or flood the board.

Work with Incure

The right coating and process depend on board complexity, throughput, environment, and any listing requirements. Email Us with those details for a recommendation.

To design a coating and cure line or qualify a coating to a customer specification, Contact Our Team.

Visit www.incurelab.com for more information.

A solvent-based conformal coating spends most of its process time evaporating.
