Choosing the Lamp
A UV LED lamp in the 365 to 405 nm range cures most hobby glass resins. Output matters: a stronger lamp cures faster and reaches deeper into a thicker bead. Curing Through Colored or Textured Glass
Clear glass passes UV light freely. Deeply colored, opaline, or heavily textured glass absorbs and scatters it, so the adhesive under that glass cures slowly or not at all. Work around it by curing from the clear side, extending the exposure time, or using a stronger lamp. If both pieces are opaque glass, position the lamp to reach the adhesive from the edge of the joint.
Common Mistakes
- Too much resin, which squeezes out and cures as a visible ridge.
- A weak lamp on a thick bead, leaving the center soft.
- Skipping the alcohol wipe, so a fingerprint oil film weakens the bond.
- Curing before alignment, locking in a crooked joint.
- Assuming a surface cure is a full cure, when the underside is still liquid.
Finishing a UV Bond
Once cured, a UV resin joint can be trimmed with a sharp blade, sanded flush with fine wet-or-dry paper, and polished back to clarity with a plastic polish.
