Needle Bonding Adhesives: Secure Assembly of Fluid-Path Components
In the assembly of disposable fluid-transfer devices, the joint between a stainless steel cannula and its molded plastic hub has to hold pressure, resist pull-out, and never restrict the lumen. Needle bonding adhesives are the light-cured resins that make that joint fast, repeatable, and inspectable on a high-volume line. Why Adhesive Bonding for the Needle-to-Hub Joint Mechanical crimping and insert molding both work, but adhesive bonding gives assemblers advantages that matter at scale. A light-cure adhesive wicks into the annular gap between cannula and hub, forms a 360-degree seal, and cures in one to three seconds under a spot lamp. There is no heat applied to the plastic, no moving tooling to maintain, and the process is a single dispense-and-cure step that integrates cleanly with rotary indexing equipment. Because the adhesive only cures when exposed to light, work-in-process parts can queue without setting up. Real Incure Grades for This Joint Incure Cyro-Weld UV and visible-light-curable adhesives are formulated for device-component bonding and are formulated to meet ISO 10993-5 for cytotoxicity. Useful grades for cannula bonding include: Cyro-Weld 5002F and 5004F: low-viscosity fluorescing grades that wick into tight annular gaps and let an inspector confirm a complete fillet under a black light. Cyro-Weld 5013F, 5013FT, and 5013FVT: a viscosity ladder in the same fluorescing chemistry, from flowable to gel, for hubs with larger or less consistent gaps. Cyro-Weld 5005F and 5017F: grades tuned for adhesion to polycarbonate, ABS, and polypropylene hub materials. For assemblies that also use an instant adhesive elsewhere, the Cyro-Weld CM cyanoacrylate series (for example CM-3, CM-4, and CM-9 in low-viscosity wicking grades) is also formulated to meet ISO 10993-5. A gap under about 0.05 mm needs a water-thin wicking grade that capillary action can pull the full bond length. Larger or eccentric gaps need a medium or thixotropic grade that stays in the joint rather than draining. Too thin a grade in a wide gap leaves voids; too thick a grade in a tight gap never fully penetrates. Dispense a metered drop at the hub entrance and let capillary flow complete the fillet before cure. Cure Equipment Needle bonding is almost always done with a UV or visible spot lamp and a light guide aimed at the hub.
