UV dome coating produces that effect in seconds by curing a clear resin under ultraviolet light rather than waiting hours for a solvent or two-part system to set. What UV Dome Coating Is UV dome coating is the controlled application of a clear, UV-curable resin over a graphic, nameplate, or small part, followed by exposure to UV light that polymerizes the resin into a solid. Surface tension pulls the liquid resin into a smooth, convex profile before cure, so the finished coating has a rounded edge and a lens-like center. The result is a hard, high-gloss shell bonded to the substrate. The process has three steps: Surface preparation. The substrate is cleaned so the resin wets out fully and adheres. Adhesion to paper and coated stock, to rigid plastics such as polycarbonate and acrylic, and to metal or glass each call for different formulations. Confirm adhesion with a cross-hatch and a humidity soak on the actual substrate. Set the target hardness and flexibility. A rigid, high-hardness resin gives strong scratch resistance for nameplates and panels. A slightly flexible grade survives on labels that wrap a curved surface or flex in handling. Confirm outdoor requirements. If the part sees sunlight, specify a resin with UV stabilizers so the dome resists yellowing and surface haze. Plan the application method.
